Public relations is all about managing the reputation of your organization in the public. Most of the time, public relations for your company involves interviews and public meetings with the media. Sometimes, however, a public meeting will be impossible for the company's PR representative. They may be on a trip for example. Another reason that a company may not want a public meeting is because they want to maintain their privacy and confidentiality.
In any of these circumstances, a phone conference may be more suitable. A phone conference can still provide a positive public relations image. The company does not ignore or evade the media. The media can still ask questions over the phone, and the company can still provide a statement. However, the company can be more relaxed because they do not have to provide a public face to the media.
Public relations is very much about maintaining good relationships with the press. A phone conference is a good alternative to a large public media conference.
