PR for Your New Business

If you´re a new entrepreneur, first of all congratulations! And second of all, do you know your public relations strategy? Unless you´ve happened upon a great industry when it´s in especially heavy demand, building a great brand will very likely be the difference between success and failure for your business. Public relations, branding, and marketing are a closely related trio of strategies that all add up to one thing – your reputation with other businesses and consumers. Here are some tips to consider when creating your first PR strategy.

Intertwine PR, Marketing, and Branding

PR is your direct interaction with the public, often mediated through news outlets. Marketing is the way you present your products to the consumer while branding is the distilled message of what your company is all about. Try to create as much overlap between these three functions as you can, so that they become very mutually reinforcing.

Set a Marketing Budget

PR and marketing will be consistent, ongoing expenses, so don´t expect to cover this with a payday loan. Make some space in your operating budget to cultivate your image with the public.

Look For Your Hedgehog Concept

The Hedgehog Concept is an idea that was popularized by the business classic Good To Great, which studied very successful, fast growing companies in depth. Your hedgehog concept is the intersection of what you can be best in the world at, what drives your economic engine, and what you are passionate about. Figure yours out and stick to it; your hedgehog concept should be central to your brand.

Center The Message Around Authenticity

Great brands avoid being stagy and fake. Consumers may be apathetic towards some things that matter, but they aren´t particularly easy to lie to. A successful brand has to send a message that really resonates with them. If you aren´t cool and young, don´t pretend to be cool and young.
